So I figured we needed a basic Facebook page since it is a very significant topic when we are talking about cyber-culture. Facebook is a social networking website which allows an individual to create a profile with a picture, add friends to their list, and share things with them through the internet. What was started in February 2004 by a small group of Harvard Students has now become a national internet phenomenon with over 600 million users as of January 2011. Facebook has many features that a user can use to communicate with his/her friends. You can send messages, share personal photos or videos, and share public videos/pictures from the web. The most popular feature is probably your own personal "wall". Your friends can post things onto your "wall". Depending on your preferences it can be public for everybody to see with a Facebook page or just your friends or your friends' friends. To check out all the features of Facebook you would have to sign up by clicking the link above if you are not one of the 600 million users out there. If you do not have a Facebook and are not interested in signing up you can read about it on the Facebook Wikipedia page, which is where I got all my basic information. (nfoltz).
History
Facebook has an incredible and interesting story behind it. In fact, so interesting Hollywood made a film about it, The Social Network, which is now up for the Academy Award for best picture. It all started with Harvard sophomore, Mark Zuckerberg, who launched the site on February 4th, 2004. A week later he was accused by Harvard seniors, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss for stealing what was their idea first. This progressed into a huge lawsuit and was brought to the courtroom. Winklevoss claimed that Zuckerberg had an agreement with them to help launch their site, Harvard Connection (similar to Facebook), and instead of helping them he ran with their idea. This argument did not hold up in court well and it seemed as if this lawsuit had been settled with Zuckerberg on top. Within the finalizing days, the Winklevosses and their lawyers claimed that Zuckerberg had a hard drive that contained emails which would prove that he stole their idea. The case was sent to another judge who approved the settlement. This now has many people wondering if Zuckerberg did steal the Winklevoss's idea and businessinsider.com has an incredible theory and a lot of information that seems to prove that Zuckerberg did steal Facebook which I highly suggest you check out.
The rest of the history isn't as interesting. The domain name, facebook.com was bought for $200,000 in 2005. Facebook then became available to some selected companies and soon to everyone who was 13 or older and had an email account. In 2007 Microsoft bought 1.6% share for $240 million and by 2010 Facebook was estimated at a $41 billion value. My personal favorite fact about Facebook is that the second week of March 2010 more people visited Facebook than Google.
